Old Codger

Dictionary definitions of 'codger' are:

1) a somewhat eccentric old man

2) affectionately used to refer to an eccentric, amusing old man.

The origin of codger seems to lie in the links between cadger and codger (not, as suggested, a contraction of 'coffin-dodger').

In some parts of England the two words were used interchangeably, whereas in other regions they were separate words, one meaning 'beggar' and the other 'eccentric fellow'.
